How to handle an automobile accident like a pro

If you are lucky, you will go through life without swapping paint with another car. Still, because motor vehicle accidents are common on Houston’s roadways, you should think about how to handle a collision. With a bit of preparation, you can boost your chances of recovering fully from an automobile accident.

As you likely know, vehicle crashes can be both scary and confusing. While you probably cannot plan for every eventuality, you should develop a strategy for responding to an accident. Here are some tips for getting through the minutes, hours, days and weeks after a wreck.

Contact the police

Law enforcement officers understand how to investigate car collisions. They also know how to assign fault and document the accident. For a variety of reasons, obtaining an official police report is often a valuable first step in receiving payment for your injuries and property damage.

Create your own record

The official police report may have gaps in it. Therefore, if you can do so without risking your personal safety, create your own record of the accident scene. Try to write down your memory of how the collision unfolded. Remember, a picture is often worth a thousand words. Therefore, take many photographs of the accident. Finally, gather the name and contact information of everyone involved in the collision. If there are any witnesses, ask them for their personal details as well.

Go to the doctor

You may think you do not need to seek medical attention for your injuries. You should know, however, that some serious injuries take a significant amount of time to reveal themselves. Therefore, always go to the doctor after an automobile collision. When you do, explain what happened in as much detail as possible. This will help you both to obtain adequate medical care and to further document the accident. If your doctor recommends treatment, be sure you follow his or her advice precisely.

Avoid talking to the insurance adjuster

Adjusters generally want to maximize profit for insurance companies. As such, they may not necessarily have your best interests in mind when proposing a settlement. Before you discuss the matter with an adjuster, consider talking with legal counsel.

You may never have to worry about an automobile accident. If you find yourself in the middle of one, however, you need a plan to protect both yourself and your legal rights. By thinking about how to handle a wreck, you increase your chances of receiving compensation for your injuries.
