Texas laws about texting and driving

In years' past, thousands of car accidents occurred as a result of people using their phones while driving. This led to numerous people losing their lives and even more sustaining significant injuries. To combat this epidemic, the Texas state legislature has passed new laws in recent years. On September 1st, 2017, a new law went into effect that prohibits the use of cell phones while operating a motor vehicle.

With this new law, people cannot text, email or use apps while driving. People who break these laws can expect fines, which is better than the alternative. The goal of these laws is to reduce the number of car accidents in Texas, so make sure you abide by them all.

What you can and cannot do while driving

According to Texas law, anyone under the age of 18 cannot use a mobile device in any capacity. Even if a teenager were to use a hands-free device, it would still result in consequences. However, adults over the age of 18 can use a phone as long as it is hands-free. Adults can also use the GPS on their smartphones or play music as long as they keep their hands off the phone while the car is in motion. Regardless of how old you are, you can use mobile devices for emergency purposes.

Penalties for breaking these laws

For a first offense, anyone caught using his or her phone behind the wheel can expect a fine between $25 and $99. For repeat offenders, the fine can get as high as $200. The exact amount of the fine can vary from one county to the next. Certain counties had laws prohibiting texting and driving well before these state laws went into place, so you may have to pay more in those areas. The ultimate goal of all this is to ensure people arrive at their destinations safely and alive.
