3 ways drivers cause motorcycle accidents

Riding your motorcycle is a fun activity, but it can also be dangerous. Sadly, car and truck drivers often do not see motorcyclists and are likely to cause accidents. Due to the small size of your vehicle, motorists may fail to notice you, causing a collision. When it is you and your bike up against a passenger car or giant truck, you suffer the most injuries and property damage. According to the United States Department of Transportation, nearly 5,000 motorcyclists died in motor vehicle accidents in 2015. Motorcycle riders are 27 times more likely to die in a wreck than occupants of passenger vehicles.

While you cannot predict motorist negligent on any given day, you can take some steps to ensure your own safety. The first step to reducing the likelihood of a crash is knowing about the most common types of motorcycle accidents.

1. Cars turning left

Watch out for drivers who may turn left when you are passing them or going through an intersection. Left-hand turn collisions can be deadly for motorcyclists. You may not be visible to a driver turning left, so be alert and try your best to stay out of blind spots.

2. Lane changes

One of the worst fears of motorcyclists is a car suddenly veering into their lane without warning. This is common because drivers are not instinctively looking for motorcycles, and you may be in a blind spot. Keep an eye out for signs that a motorist may be about to shift lanes, such as turning the wheel, turn signals or the motorist looking left and/or right.

3. Opening doors

You may find it convenient to ride near parked vehicles, especially if there is a lot of traffic. However, do not assume that stationary cars are safe; a car door may suddenly open and injure you. Avoid the temptation to ride between parked cars and active traffic.
